The Hindustan College of Arts & Science was founded by our founder Dr. K.C.G. Verghese in the year 1995. It is a unit of Hindustan Group of Institutions, affiliated to the University of Madras and is accorded the Minority Status by National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions, Govt. of India. The College offers 15 Under Graduate, 7 Post Graduate courses and 2 M.Phil Research programmes.
Started as a Centre of excellence in Applied Sciences and Arts, the College was Accredited by NAAC with ‘B’ grade in the academic year 2012 – 2013. It has well–equipped laboratories for Electronics and Communication Science, Computer Science, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Entomology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Multimedia, Audio and Television production, Drawing and Graphic Design, Edit suite and Photography.
Hindustan College of Arts & Science has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with students from China, Nepal, Bhutan, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Oman and from other states in India, and has been selected by the University of Madras to conduct regular NSS programs.
There are over 100 qualified faculty members with NET / SLET or Ph.D. Some are Post – Doctorate Fellows dedicated to research activities in their respective departments.

Dr. K. C. G. Verghese, though born in an ordinary middle class family in Kerala, by dint of his hard work, rose to one of the top-ranking educationists.
He held on to his dreams and converted them into reality. His relentless work drove him to success. He was the pioneer to promote technical education in our country. He helped the students explore their own potential. He made them realize that education, hard work and commitment to the nation are the only means to get themselves employable and overcome poverty.
He firmly believed, "Every human being has infinite potential. The role of an educator is to bring out the best in every individual and that of an educational institution to provide the best facilities and the right ambience." The Hindustan Group of Institutions caters to over 5000 students. It has an amazing staff strength of almost a 1000 and has a scintillating alumni of over 50,000 students. These are the testimonies of his deep-rooted desire to fulfill his aspirations. He was a true patriot and he always advised the youngsters to serve their own country.
His penchant for 'Wheels and Wings' made him adventurous all through his life and his indomitable spirit always rose to the occasion and facilitated him to lead from the front. His personality had all the nuances of a great human being. He valued friendship and showed great respect, love and concern to his teachers, his family members and parents in equal measure.
The best tribute we can ever offer this architect of the Hindustan Group of Institutions could be to emulate his ideals and work toward realizing his dreams. Dr.Susan Marthandan, the daughter of Late. Dr. K.C.G. Verghese, was highly influenced by his ideals and goals, a father who was an educationist, visionary, philanthropist and the pioneer in starting private engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu and private air taxiing in India.
Dr. Susan Marthandan, did her MBBS and Post Graduation MS (Ophthalmology) as a University topper . She has actively participated in numerous National and International Conferences.
Dr. Susan, is currently the Director of Hindustan College of Arts & Science, a Christian Minority Institution, affiliated to the University of Madras, a Unit of the Hindustan Group of Institutions, Chennai, NAAC Certified and recognized by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu. She has built this College into one the finest Arts & Science Colleges in India, with about 4000 students.
Also, she began the Hindustan Community College, an institution for the socio-economically weak, under privileged, marginalized, and school dropouts, in our society. Running since the past 9 years HCC has close to 280 students this year. The starting of this Institution is in line with her father, Dr. K.C.G. Verghese's motto: “To Make Every Man A Success, No Man A Failure.” Dr. Susan’s passion for ophthalmology and good health, has resulted in the initiation of her new venture “Smart Vision & Diabetes Clinic” to meet the demands for comprehensive eye care and diabetes management. After serving as secretary of the Indo Australian association which is a 35 years old organization, she is presently the President of the Indo Australian Association, Chennai.
She has 3 sons and is a vocal advocate of organ donation.
Deputy Director of Academics
Dr. V.J.Philip who began his school education in Mysore, completed it at Clarence (1961-1967). Armed with a solid spiritual and educational foundation laid in Clarence and a love for Chemistry instilled by Mr.P.N.Abraham, he joined Madras Christian College (MCC) and obtained B.Sc. (1968-1971) and M.Sc. (1971-1973). He was immediately invited to join the faculty in Chemistry (1973). He holds a Doctorate in Physical Organic Chemistry (1980) from the University of Madras.
Dr. V.J.Philip took up the Principalship of the 175-year old prestigious Madras Christian College after serving as Head of the Department of Chemistry, MCC. As Head of the Department of Chemistry, Dr. V.J.Philip’s tenure was marked by intensified efforts to enhance the research profile of the Department. He successfully instituted the DST-FIST sponsored programme worth 32 lakhs to strengthen the teaching and research in the Department, and also instituted the UGC sponsored career-oriented programme “Professional Pharmaceutical Salesmanship” for training students effectively toward a career.
As Principal of MCC Dr. Philip has successfully retained the heritage of a World class institution, and enhanced its performance and productivity. As the CEO of the institution, Dr. Philip has managed the day to day affairs of a dynamic multi-faceted institution, which consists of an ‘Aided-Stream’ (Day-College) and a Self-Financed Stream (Evening College), and many sub units ranging from student residences, schools, to a community outreach centre and a hundred acre agricultural farm. He has provided leadership to an institution that consists of 300 highly qualified teaching staff, over 250 non-teaching staff, and nearly 5000 students.
During his tenure as Principal he has guided the growth of the Self-Financed Stream (SFS) of the College, which is an academic as well as entrepreneurial challenge. The SFS has seen rapid growth during his tenure, with the introduction of new courses, recruitment of nearly 100 faculty members, development of infrastructure such as labs and new classrooms, and a vast increase in student strength. The creation of a successful revenue model for the SFS has vastly improved the overall finances of the college, resulting in rapid infrastructural development for the College as a whole.
Responding to the challenges of Globalization Dr. Philip has focused on developing partnerships between MCC and many foreign institutions. Furman University, Appalachian University, and North Western College in USA, Bremen University of Applied Sciences in Germany, Liverpool-Hope University in U.K., Mediant Mental Health Institute in Holland, Thompson Rivers University in Canada, University of South Australia and Flinders University in Australia, are some of the Institutions with which MCC has developed partnerships and exchange programs during his tenure. Dr. Philip has personally traveled to some of these institutions to negotiate and conclude partnerships. He has also overseen the implementation of the Choice Based Credit System in MCC which is on par with World class institutions now.
The other major area of focus during his tenure has been developing industry-institution linkages. During his tenure MCC has signed and instituted partnerships with the ICICI Bank, Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), Google, Orchid Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Ltd., and CavinKare Pvt Ltd. His tenure as Principal has witnessed rapid expansion of Campus Recruitment that has brought in many leading Industries and Businesses such as Wipro, TCS, CTS, Google and Goldman & Sachs. With his emphasis on the Soft Skills development of students, the placement ratio of students has shown high rates of growth. During his Principalship Madras Christian College has consistently been ranked by ‘India Today’ among the Top Ten Colleges in the country in Science, Humanities and Commerce streams.
After retiring from MCC, Dr. V.J. Philip was appointed as the Principal of another prestigious institution, Hindustan College of Arts & Science (HCAS) – (2010 – 2014). Under his leadership the College submitted its self-study report to National Assessment & Accreditation Council (NAAC) obtaining a ‘B’ grade (2013) and recently was reaccredited with B+ grade (2018). Currently he is the Deputy Director Academics and oversees faculty Training & Development, International Collaboration and obtaining Accreditation from International agencies (2014 to date).
Dr. S. Thirumagan has been serving the field of Education for around three decades. His rich experience and devoted services in several engineering colleges as Mathematician, is highly appreciable. He served as Principal for seven years from 2007 in an Arts & Science College situated in North Chennai affiliated to the University of Madras.
He was conferred the 'Best Principal Award' by Tamilnadu Institute of Education and Research Association in 2011. He served as 'Syndicate Member' in the premier 'University of Madras' and served in various committees including Affiliation Committee.As a gem on the crown of his educational services, he held the post of the 'Controller of Examinations' in the University of Madras from 2014-2017.
During his sucessful tenure as Controller of Examinations, he introduced a lot of Examination reforms like Online Registration systems, Online payments, Question papers through online for Distance Education Examinations in foreign countries etc. He published the Examination Results well in advance for the past three years for which Complementary Resolutions were passed by honorable members in Senate and Academic Council meetings. Totally 3300 Ph.D. Degrees were awarded during his service without any pending file.
He attended 21 conferences and seminars in National & International level and published 16 research papers. He authored a Mathematical Handbook for 10th, +1, +2, Polytechnic & Engineering students. In addition to his committed service, his interest towards the Field of Fine Arts is noteworthy and never-ending. He has been conferred with several awards like'Tamil Sudar' by Kamban Kazhagam, 'Vidya Seva Ratna' by Bharathi Yuvakendra & 'Duo Artistes Award' by Nadhabramam.
