Description:

Azolla is a fast growing protein (20%) rich aquatic fern. It is also called as water fern, duck weed, fairy moss and mosquito fern. We can use Azolla as a fodder, food, pollution control agent and biofertilizer. Hence, Enviro Club, Department of Biotechnology was decided to start Azolla production unit in our campus in zero budget. So we received permission from the management for the same.  

After the approval from management, five Enviro club volunteers were made an Azolla cultivation pit and green mat tent. We acquired Azolla seeds from Kishan Vigas Kendra, Kattupakkam and inoculated it in the Azolla cultivation pit. Later, our beloved Director, Dr. Susan Marthandan inaugurated the Azolla Production Unit on 8^th August 2019 in the presence of Deputy Director of Academics, Dr. V.J. Philip, Principal, Dr. S. Thirumagan, Vice Principal, Mr. Samuel Sampath Kumar, Dean, Dr. S. Illanjiam, HOD, Dr. Elizabeth Rani Juneius, Staff members and Students of Biotechnology.  Dr. T. Ramesh, Assistant Professor, involved in this project and played a key role.
