About the Department

Introduction

The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2002. It offers both UG and PG courses and also offer a research component which includes M. Phil. in Biotechnology. The department has well qualified faculty, good infrastructure which includes well equipped laboratories with sophisticated instruments. The department has also signed many MoUs with various well known institutions. The students of the department have secured university ranks in UG and PG Examinations conducted by the University of Madras. The department regularly conducts symposium and workshops at both national and international levels. In addition, it organizes guest lectures by eminent scientists so that students get a firsthand knowledge of the cutting edge research being carried out in Biotechnology. It encourages both UG and PG students to carry out indoor research projects and motivates them to present and publish their research outcomes. In the year 2010-2011, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Department of Ocean Development sanctioned Rs.1 lakh to conduct a National Symposium cum Workshop on Marine Metagenomics for drug discovery.

Objective

  • To publicize facts and figures related to problems in health, agriculture and environmental degradation and pollution, for which biotechnology offers promising solutions.
  • To provide a platform for students and teachers of biotechnology, to articulate their points of view and nurture them as ambassadors to promote safe and appropriate deployment of biotechnology.
  • To undertake projects in collaboration with National and International agencies.

Scope of the Course

Biotechnology is such a vast discipline and hence its scope is immense. The students of Biotechnology can pursue careers in a wide range of areas. They can gain employment in pharmaceutical companies, health care, crop production, and more. They can also find employment in companies tackling energy or environment issues. The scope of a career in Biotechnology is not just limited to the government sector but has ample demand in the private sector as well. Extending the scope of careers even further are those Biotechnology graduates with an entrepreneurial spirit who go on to set up companies of their own. Since it is an interdisciplinary science, it is an area in which a lot of research is being carried out world over. Both the developed and developing countries have invested huge sum in this field. Hence students have the option of pursuing a research career in Biotechnology. Biotechnology is radically changing the way that issues related to human health, agriculture and environment. The biotechnologist can be occupied in various job functions like 1.Reserch & development 2.Manufacturing & technical support 3.Quality & regulatory 4.Sales and technical support 5.KPO’S 6.IPR & Bioethics. The Department of Biotechnology of Hindustan College of Arts & Science will always train students to bring life-altering positive changes to face the challenges in a holistic approach.

Add-On Courses

The Department of Biotechnology offers a BSS Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology as add on course along with UG/PG courses from the academic year 2015-2016 onwards. The course is affiliated by Bharat Sevak Samaj Vocational Education, Affiliation No: (TN/7732). Medical laboratory technicians can work in private hospitals, nursing homes, blood banks, pathology laboratories and can also run a private medical laboratory. In addition to that if the biotechnology students want to enter into Medical Biotechnology field, this will be an added qualification for them. So far 50 students have been successfully completed this course and currently 112 students have enrolled for the same.

The students who completed biotechnology who can get job from government sector too. The eligible students may get jobs like, Technical Assistant and Field Assistant etc in the Government sectors of India.

Research scientists don't just work in the lab all the time, much of their time may be devoted to writing papers, or grant proposals, attending seminars and conferences, and they may or may not be involved in teaching university students. Laboratory technicians and lab assistants spend most of their time in the lab, doing the day to day tasks of carrying out the research. They would be working with a variety of sophisticated equipment, preparing chemicals, and possibly maintaining experimental microbial, plant, or animal tissue cultures. They may be required to work with plants in a greenhouse or field setting, or to work with lab animals. Sales reps obviously try to sell their products. They may be selling the products of the biotechnology industry to farmer, doctors, or other industries, or selling scientific equipment and supplies to biotech researchers. Quality controllers work in labs or other types of production facilities testing the products that are for sale to ensure that they are safe and that they meet the required standards. In the fields of Medical Coding or Billing the work would mostly be on the computer. However, an understanding of the science involved would also be required.

Research scientists require a M.Sc. or Ph.D. This requires at least 2 to 5 years of practical training. Lab technicians typically require a B.Sc. or M.Sc. which requires 3 to 5 years of practical training. These practical training are included in the UG & PG curriculam itself.  Moreover, we offer 2- year course in “Diploma Medical Laboratory Technology” with minimum fees. This additional diploma course will help to purse the job quickly.

                                                Biotechnology is a very exciting sector. It is a relatively new field and many aspects of it are constantly changing. It has already made numerous contributions to solving significant problems in medicine and agriculture and promises to continue contributions in those areas as well as solving environmental, energy and possibly other problems as well. Those who work in the research lab - the scientists, lab technicians and lab assistants - are constantly learning new things, problem solving and working on the forefront of scientific discovery. With such a diversity of job opportunities, it is possible to grow into different roles and levels of responsibility and salary over time as your interests and abilities grow. Opportunities also exist both domestically and internationally if desired.
 

                                                Students can work as Technicians Hospitals and Quality control officer cum scientist in Pharmaceutical industries, Food processing industries, Pollution control department, Agricultural department for organic farming and biofertilizers.  Students can start their own company in the field of microbiology.
