SHAMPOO COLLECTION DRIVE – IMH – JUNE 26th, 2024
The department of Social Work at Hindustan College of Arts & Science, Chennai initiated a Shampoo Collection Drive on 26 June 2024, to support the inmates of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Chennai.
IMH, which is 225 years old, is one of the biggest and oldest mental hospitals in Asia, located at Kilpauk, Chennai. The facility have 21 wards for different forms of mental health treatment which includes de-addiction, mentally ill convicts, intense psychiatric treatment, and geriatric patients. 1800 inpatients can be accommodated at IMH. The majority of the inpatients are admitted for treating schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, alcohol and, drug addicts and traumatic brain injury. The hospital encounters an average of 500 outpatients every day and have six specialty clinics, including child and adolescent services.
The Shampoo Collection Drive was organized by the students of the department of Social Work, to assist the inmates of IMH and make them understand the importance of personal hygiene. It aids in the improvement of mental health through developing the self-esteem by maintaining their cleanliness. It also encourages community involvement and fosters a sense of solidarity and support. On this shampoo collection drive is a powerful way to support those in need by providing essential hygiene products. It not only addresses immediate personal care needs but also promotes dignity and well-being. Engaging the community in such initiatives fosters a sense of solidarity and raises awareness about the challenges faced by vulnerable populations. Ultimately, it strengthens local support networks and contributes to a more compassionate and caring society. The students of the department of Social Work is ought to be appreciated to come up with such an initiative.
