The Department of English, established in 2011, offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) program in English and is home to 13 dedicated faculty members and 150 enthusiastic students. The department is firmly committed to its mission of imparting knowledge and nurturing students to excel academically by equipping them with a strong foundation in English literature, language, and personal development.
A highly effective teaching strategy employed by the department for Part II English, spanning from Semester I to Semester IV, revolves around a skill-based approach. This approach places a strong emphasis on developing the four essential language skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (LSRW).
In addition to its academic pursuits, the department actively engages with the student community through various initiatives such as seminars and guest lectures. Beyond the prescribed curriculum, the department also offers value-added courses designed to equip students with practical, transferable life skills.
Facilities within the department are top-notch, featuring smart classrooms and a language laboratory. These resources are instrumental in providing students with hands-on practical exposure to language skills through engaging exercises and interactive applications.

Staff Exchange Programme and Workshop on Malaysian Literature was organized as a part of MOU signed with the TARUMT, Malaysia from 21- 25 August 2023. Mrs. SashikalaSunmugam, Lecturer, TARUMT, Malaysia was the resource person. It paved a way for the students to be enlightened about the vast cultural differences and similarities of both the countries enriching their understanding about English Literature. The workshop demanded the active participation of the students resulting in a cultural exchange of ideas and ideologies.
An MoU was signed between TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE,MALAYSIA and HINDUSTAN COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCE, CHENNAI on 19th January 2022. Through this MoU, the department successfully conducted a webinar on Cultural Studies. The Department is looking forward to collaborate with them through staff exchange programme. Mr. Thilip Kumar Moorthy, Lecturer and Teaching Practicum Co-ordinator from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College, Malaysia visited our institution and addressed the students with his intellectual inputs. Subsequently, Mrs.J. Jabeela Shirlin, Head In-charge, Department of English visited TARUC, Malaysia for the same in the month of November.
