Masters of Commerce or M.Com is a post graduate level course ideal for candidates who wish to make a career in banking financial services and insurance (BFSI) as well as accounting and commerce sectors. The 2-year course delves deeper into the functioning of the economy, capital, revenue, trade, taxes, etc. taught in B. Com. Since, M.Com. is a specialized area in itself, only those candidates who have pursued B.Com, can go for it. M.Com. is also a good option for CA/CS candidates.

The course is largely about numbers, graphs and calculations, hence it is essential for an aspirant to have sharp analytical skills and love for numbers. The course helps sharpen logical reasoning, eye for details, ability to remember facts and handle pressure along with increasing knowledge of banking and financial sectors, building strong leadership qualities and familiarizing students to computers.

The course imparts in-depth knowledge in the field of accounting and finance covering all the areas of various specialisation which is a major advantage to the students as they gain knowledge about the different domains. The course in general is all about understanding the whole commerce field in a capsule form making the graduate an expert in the area of commerce mainly accounting, management and other areas of which only the basics were covered in the under graduate course.

After completing M.Com. (General), a candidate can seek employment in the BFSI sector, opt for teaching or lecturer-ship or go for research. There are various job options for M.Com. (General) degree holders in private, public as well as government sectors. Nationalised banks, Railways, Income Tax and other such government departments are good options to aim for a secure and prosperous career. Every business organization, whether it is an international conglomerate or a NGO, requires commerce graduates in various capacities to run their finance and accounting department. Banks and auditing firms also hire M.Com. (General) degree holders in large numbers.

The course curriculum deems it necessary for the students to undergo one internship and a project during the course. In today’s competitive job market, employers are looking for the best of the best. They want you to have a glowing resume, an array of extracurricular hobbies and, on top of that, previous professional experience. But as a fresher, the only way to gain professional experience is through internships and project work. By completing internships and projects successfully, students not only build their skills but also gain a network of professional contacts who will give them the opportunity to work full time.
