The Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) is the fundamental research degree prior to pursuing Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.), and the research department commenced in 2010. The department has industrial and institutional links to facilitate internships and guest lectures by senior academicians. The course also throws light on numerous opportunities in higher education and research, pertaining to the discipline of Microbiology like post doctorate to excel in research. The department also strives to improve research scholars’ academic performance and maximize their participation in curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Besides curriculum, special focus is laid on the development of personality, inter-personal relationships and leadership traits, to groom future citizens.

A candidate who wishes to pursue a Ph.D. degree on full-time or part-time should apply in the prescribed format on or before the due dates (twice) announced by the University of Madras every year.
Duration: One year.
Eligibility: Postgraduate degree in Microbiology / Applied Microbiology with first class.
Procedure: Applications will be invited by open advertisement. Selected candidates will be called for a personal interview conducted at the college campus. Final Selection will be based on the overall merit index of the candidate which will be arrived at, by taking into account the candidate’s performance in the previous university examinations at Master’s level and the performance in the written test, research output and the performance in personal interview.
Microbiology has diverse fields with tremendous growth. It has numerous applications in all walks of life. If one registers for M. Phil. programme, particularly in Microbiology, they will gain a unique opportunity to do research in several areas of specializations. It is an additional qualification too. M. Phil. leads to Ph.D. and reduces the duration of Ph.D. program by one year, as it has research methodology.
