The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), in Commerce, started in 2021; The Department of Commerce has emphasized and encouraged potential for quality research which has always been an important criterion in faculty selection. A fundamental principle followed from the beginning is that teaching and research must remain equally vital and important elements in the shaping of an academic institution. An important aim of the research activity at the Department of Commerce is to enhance the quality of interaction between the institute and industry for solving problems in the broad field of commerce.
The field of commerce has earned a substantial amount of relevance in recent years, particularly with its applications in business. The trends and the motives of business are at the pinnacle of the game has led to the exploration of the varied fields of study in this stream. The Doctoral level program in Commerce entrusts the students to gain tremendous knowledge in the aspects of business, and its fundamentals in management.
This program aims to generate interest in the minds of the students to promote the growth and development of commerce, and related disciplines, through the applicability of research. The study of the program combines the fundamentals of Commerce bringing out a comprehensive field of knowledge for the students to explore in depth. The program also promotes nurturing the skills, competence and sense of inquiry among students, by building in them the skills of problem solving and creativity.

General Instructions
The Ph.D. candidate without M.Phil should undertake the course work; it shall have three papers which including “Research and Publication Ethics” paper. The Ph.D. candidate exempted from the course work because of completion of M.Phil should write the paper “Research and Publication Ethics”. The M.Phil candidates who have registered in inter-disciplinary mode should write three papers including “Research and Publication Ethics” within one year of admission into the Ph.D. Programme.

A candidate who wishes to pursue a Ph.D. degree as full time or part time should apply in the prescribed format on or before the due dates (twice) announced by the University of Madras every year.

Procedure:
The application will be invited by open advertisement. Selected candidates will be called for a personal interview conducted at the college campus. The final Selection of candidates is based on the overall merit index, performance in the previous university examinations at the Master’s level, the written test, research output and a personal interview.
