13th of August 2010 will go down in the history of the Social Work Department as the official inaugural of the department in the Hindustan College of Arts & Science. The Department of Social Work activities are guided by the vision statement of our Founder, “Make Every Man A Success, No Man A Failure”.
The Department of Social Work started a new course; Bachelor of Social Work in the academic year 2018-19. The formal inauguration was held on 4th July 2018.
The department offers both Undergraduate and Post graduate programme in social work. It has fully qualified faculty. The objective of the department is to transform the students into professional Social Workers committed to the values of Social Work by maximizing opportunities for every individual to realize his or her highest potential. The students undergo rigorous training in theory as well as practical work. The department has networked and worked with several International Non-Governmental Organization and Non Governmental Organization. The students are undergoing field internship in these organizations. The department strives to give state level exposure and also international exposure to students in Social Work Practice. The alumni of the department are well placed in several companies and Non-Governmental organizations.

The Hindustan College of Arts & Science, Chennai signed an MOU with PAC University, Nairobi, Kenya on 10th November 2020. The MoU was virtually signed by Dr. Susan Marthandan, Director, Hindustan College of Arts & Science, Chennai and Prof. Margaret J Muthwii, Vice-Chancellor, PAC University. The other present were Dr. S. Thirumagan, Principal, HCAS, Dr. V, J. Philip, Deputy Director – HCAS, Mr. Samuel Sampath Kumar, Vice Principal-HCAS and Dr. R. Sakthi Prabha, Dean & Head, Department of Social Work, HCAS.
Social work is a professional degree which equips the students to understand various methods, values, principles and practices of social work in different settings. It make students more confident, compassionate, creative and to be more socially responsible towards people in the society.
The department offers Under Graduation and Post Graduation in social work.
Bachelor of Social Work is a professional under graduate degree course, which aims at providing quality education in the area of social work. It is a three-year course consisting of six semesters with field work practicum, an experiential component of the social work program, with student observations of social agencies, hands-on learning and other experiential learning throughout the students’ academic career.
Students should have passed the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary or equivalent examination, in any group with working knowledge of Tamil. Candidates from Boards other than Tamil Nadu State Board, CBSE, ISCE, Private study and Open Schooling must produce an Eligibility Certificate from the University of Madras.
The course module is comprehensive and has papers varying from social sciences, sociology, psychology, economics, political science, public health, community development, and law. The course module includes the Languages & English with Core Papers and Field Work Practicum
